Castle rampart stair, 8 m

Weathered medieval stone stair in dressed limestone that climbs the town-side face of the castle rampart to its 5 m wall-walk: a straight 1.4 m wide flight of 25 steep steps on a solid coursed-ashlar base with a plain open edge, a flagged landing flush with the walk and a quoined end, 8 m long to fit two rampart modules. Treads hollowed and polished by centuries of feet, chipped arrises, damp and splash at the foot, moss, mason's marks.
