Stone castle gatehouse

Twin-towered castle gatehouse in weathered limestone ashlar, 14 x 10 m and 12 m high: two square flanking towers frame a round-arched gate passage with a voussoir ring, portcullis grooves rising into a slot in the upper storey, a door rebate with drawbar holes, a barrel vault with murder holes, an upper hall with arrow slits and a timber ceiling, and a crenellated roof platform on a corbelled string course. Wall-walk doorways and wall-join sockets on both flanks for the castle rampart; heavy wear with lichen, moss, damp, run-off, cart ruts and mason's marks.
